Paul Wearly - 1916 - 2012

    John Wearly (B-US) called me last night to tell me
    that his uncle Paul passed away on Sunday Dec. 2. Paul was a major icon in the
    early days of boat racing and is noted in books like "The vintage culture of
    outboard racing".

    Here is part of the obituary posted in Muncie,
    Indiana

    MUNCIE - Paul E. Wearly, 96, passed away early Sunday morning,
    December 2, 2012, at Westminster Village following a brief illness.

    He
    was born May 15, 1916, in Montpelier, the son of Sam and Mabel Wearly.
    Paul
    graduated from Montpelier High School, and attended Ball State University,
    before graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Business. Mr. Wearly
    was owner and operator of Wearly Monuments for many years, along with his two
    brothers, Joe and Bob. Wearly Monuments was founded by Mr. Wearly's father Sam
    in 1899.

    Mr. Wearly was a two-time World Champion in Hydroplane boat
    racing. He won twenty-one National Championships, held eighteen world records,
    including the Unlimited Outboard Straightaway Record for the World's Fastest
    Outboard.

    Paul was a member of the National Outboard Hall of Fame, a
    member of American Power Boat Association Hall of Fame, a member of American
    Power Boat Association Honor Squadron- boating's highest honor, a member of the
    Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame, Indiana Sports Hall of Fame, and two-time
    winner of the John Ward International Trophy.

    Funeral services will be
    held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at The Meeks Mortuary and
    Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Dr. Dale Mendenhall officiating.
    Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Montpelier.

    Friends may
    call from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at The Meeks
    Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.
    Memorial contributions may
    be made to High Street United Methodist Church, 219 S. High St., Muncie, IN
    47305, or to the Muncie-Delaware County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 807,
    Muncie, IN 47308.

  • I was told by Clint Ferguson (a 10 time National Champion in the 30's) that Paul Wearly was the best driver that he had ever seen! That was an accurate evaluation by a contemporary driver who certianly knew what he was talking about.
